My First Mother's Day

A few years ago, I cried on Mother's Day. Every now and then, Mother's Day falls on my birthday (May 14th). That year, I had woken up -- 30something years old and was still not a mother (dog mom, yes). & Mother's Day can be a difficult day for women who long to be mothers and that day had just hit harder.

I had always thought I'd be a mom and was crying because a part of me was thinking, "Okay, maybe this will never happen for me, and if it doesn't that's okay."

Today I woke up and stared at my precious baby as he quietly snored next to me and I cried again - but this time, they were tears of happiness and gratitude. Happiness because he brings us so much joy in his little laughter, all the love he shares and fun personality and gratitude because I feel so lucky to be his mom and to be able to call him ours.

Motherhood isn't easy, but it's the most beautiful thing I'll ever do. It also comes in many forms. Today is a day that is not easy for everyone and I'm holding space for you. For the moms who are in the thick of it, for those who are experiencing grief and loss, for those who struggle with their moms or who have lost their moms and for those who long to be moms, I am thinking of you today and always. I'm also holding a very special place for the allomothers in our lives. Women who choose to show up and be present for our babies; our friends and the best aunties.
